Halloween

Leslie and Aaron - Halloween 2002
This was at a party with Aaron's family. This was our first Halloween together. My costume, if you can't tell, is a gigantic candy corn. My Mom and I made this costume about 12 years ago.
Aaron was a superhero. If you can't tell which one, then I will have to tell you... before the party, Aaron started walking around our apartment searching for things to add to his costume... before we I knew it, my husband had been transformed into none other than...

BUM MAN !!!

Every time we dressed up for this party each year, Aaron was always something that he just threw together at the last minute... literally. I would get ready to go and tell him it was time to leave in a few minutes and that is when he would begin collecting items for a costume and throw it together. He was always something clever and funny.

Well, this year, in honor of Aaron (Bum Man), I decided that it would be fun for Aaron Jr. and me to dress up as the same characters as that first year that Aaron and I were married. So...

Gigantic Candy Corn and introducing...

BUM BOY !!!

Here are some side by sides so you can see both of them.

Bum Man & Bum Boy

Their costumes were almost the same.
White T-shirts with their sheild on the front.
Gray bottoms with a pillow stuffed into the bum part.
Boots.
Electrical tape placed around arms and legs for affect.
One of Aaron's speedos that I believe he picked up in Brazil.
And, of course, the hair combed just right with a piece of hair sticking up in the back.

Here are a few other photos from this year's party:

Aaron's parents and all of their grandkids.
Sophia, Pearl, Malia, Sue, Aaron Jr, Isaac, Steve, Suzie, Grace

I was taking this photo AND spraying silly string at Aaron Jr. I didn't mean to hit him in the face. But it turned out pretty funny.

On the actual day of Halloween, we were visiting Aaron's sister, April and her family. (the next posting will show our fun trip). Here are a couple of shots from Halloween night:

Aaron Jr. in his Halloween pajamas that has spiders all over it and a hat that I bought several years ago. I bought two of these hats. The next photo is from Halloween 2004 of us wearing our hats. Anyhow, Aaron Jr. was spiderman... kind of. :)

Aaron and Leslie - Halloween 2004

April, Suzie, and Dave - Suzie was a lady bug.

Leslie and Aaron Jr.

Halloween isn't my favorite holiday, but I enjoy dressing Aaron Jr. up in fun costumes and watching him get excited. It is another day each year that Aaron is missing. Even though I don't love it, it is still something that we would have done together as a family.

We love you, Aaron...

Oh man Leslie I needed a good laugh right now and that seriously made my draw some tears. Those are awesome costumes and I am sure that in years down the road Aaron Jr. is going to be so proud that he looked just like his daddy on Halloween.

That is such a cute idea... what a wonderful way to remember Aaron, and a way for Aaron Jr. to connect with his Dad.

I just want to tell you again how much I look up to you for the ways you're facing life with all the challenges that have come. I'm constantly amazed at your grace and beauty in finding energy and spunk in the midst of all the grief. Still thinking of and praying for you...

I love it, like father like son. Can someone help me get to the bottom (no pun intended) of the Higginson distaste for Halloween? When I ask about it all the response I get is that it is evil, dark, scary, those kinds of adjectives. What about the candy, fun costumes, and fall feeling?
C'mon. It's fun.

hey kristi...
i have to admit i don't love getting dressed up. that is a main reason.
but also, the feeling of it isn't uplifting to me. that is why i have always chosen to be happy and fun things instead of scary things.
i hope i can sway aaron jr to always be something fun and happy intead of dark and evil.
but... i don't think people are dark or evil to celebrate it. it is fun to a point. dresses aaron jr up is fun... then the candy is fun. those are the only things i like about halloween.
i see why people love it, but i just don't like to dress up and stuff.
love you. hope that helps...

That is too cute Leslie! Those side by sides are hilarious! What a great memory you made this year. I'm sure Aaron, Jr. will get a kick out of that the future. Too funny!

By the way, I understand your thoughts on Halloween. We celebrate it and our kids love it, but we definitely try to keep it more upbeat and try not to visit the "dark side".
